Volvo Cars expands Daqing operation

• Daqing to become one of China’s most advanced car plants
• Expansion will spur economic development in the Daqing region
• Commitment will further boost Volvo’s sales in China

Volvo Cars today underlined its long term commitment to China by significantly expanding its manufacturing facility in Daqing, China. The company will use its Daqing plant to make the most innovative vehicles in its product range, which are based on its Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), a flexible, scalable product architecture that covers most of Volvo's future car models. This move will make Daqing one of the most advanced car making facilities in China.

Volvo Cars has an existing manufacturing facility in Daqing which was founded in September 2013. Its first product, the XC Classic, is the latest version of Volvo’s world famous XC90 SUV, and was launched in China in September 2014.

The existing Daqing plant has around 700 employees and an initial capacity of 80,000 vehicles. The first SPA Volvo to be made in Daqing will be an all-new premium Sedan.

Volvo Cars' decision to significantly expand production in Daqing highlights its growing commitment in China. The Swedish company is majority owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding, a Chinese company, but also enjoys a close and developing relationship with the Daqing city government, which owns 37 per cent of Volvo Cars.

Volvo Cars and the city of Daqing are working together to help spur economic growth and development in the city and surrounding region, driven by Volvo Cars' growing presence in the fast growing Chinese car market.

Volvo Cars expects sales in China to surpass 80,000 this calendar year, making China Volvo’s largest global market. It has a long-term goal of selling 200,000 cars a year in the country.

“Daqing will become an integral part of our global industrial footprint,” said Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo Cars’ President and Chief Executive. ”We are pleased to announce that we are going to introduce SPA and a new sedan here. We are fully committed to the growth of our business in China, our second home market.”

Cars made in the Daqing plant will be of global standards. The Daqing plant will fully adhere to Volvo’s global Volvo Car Manufacturing System (VCMS), and utilize global technology, global sourcing and provide global quality.

“Using precise, standardized production methods and world-class premium automotive technology, Daqing will provide consumers with safe, healthy, environmentally-friendly and tasteful Volvo cars with a flavour of Scandinavian luxury,” said Mr Samuelsson.

The City of Daqing

Volvo Cars is working closely with the city of Daqing to help accelerate its economic development, in line with the national policy of “Reinvigorating the Northeast.” Daqing is seeking to reduce its traditional dependence upon natural resources and instead emerge as a sophisticated and world class centre for advanced manufacturing.

“We are delighted to be working with Volvo Cars to help Daqing evolve into a high-tech, high value-added, international city with a modern industrial base. It will also lay a solid foundation for the premium car industry in Northeast China and for Volvo’s rapid development in China,” said Han Xuejian, Party Secretary of Daqing.

Volvo to build range-topping S90 sedan in China

Volvo is furthering its deep ties in China by announcing a major expansion to its factory in Daqing that will equip the site to build its future S90 sedan. The automaker is promising to make the plant, "one of the most advanced car making facilities in China," according to its press release. Unfortunately, the company isn't specifying the amount being invested or how long the work will take.

Because the northeastern Chinese city of Daqing owns about 37 percent of the automaker, the location for the significant expansion isn't entirely surprising, especially since Geely owns a majority stake in the Swedish brand. The existing factory there employs about 700 people to build the original XC90 for the local market, but the upgrades will allow the plant to handle Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture modular platform.

To be fair, Volvo doesn't specifically call out the S80-replacing S90 by name in its announcement. However, it promises the first vehicle built in Daqing after the expansion will be a new premium sedan, and the upgrades will allow the plant to make "most innovative vehicles in its product range," and the range-topping sedan is widely expected to adopt the S90 moniker.

"We are fully committed to the growth of our business in China, our second home market," Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo Cars' President and Chief Executive, in its announcement. With over 80,000 estimated sales in China this year, the market is now the automaker's single largest worldwide.

The S90 is part of Volvo's realignment of its naming scheme to its 40, 60 and 90 series, with plans for a sedan, wagon and crossover for each of them. Styling is still a mystery, but the V90 is rumored to take cues from the handsome Concept Estate. Hopefully, some of that fantastic design rubs off on the four-door, too. Scroll down to read the company's full announcement for the expansion.

Een extra commentaar op swedespeedforum: The S90L will also be manufactured in the new factory in Daqing. Currently making the previous P2 XC90 there. To be sold as the XC Classic or XC90 Classic in China. The new SPA XC90 will also eventually be made in Daqing for local markets.

Volvo has also confirmed a more luxurious version of the XC90 will also be launched soon. It has only two rows of seats in order to provide more space in the rear seats. There are only two rear seats and in fact front seats are fitted in the back too. The wheelbase hasnt been extended however. No XC90L as yet or LWB version.

The new plant in Chengdu currently manufactures the S60L and as of this week the XC60 will also be made there.

Daqing (vehicles), Chengdu (vehicles) and Zhangjiakou (engines) are Volvo owned plants run by Volvo staff who have moved there from Torslanda, Ghent or Skovde plants.

Zhangjiakou currently manufactures the 2.5T 5 cylinder and the VEA 2.0 petrol - to supply the Daqing and Chengdu plants.

The plant in Chongqing used to make the P1 S40 and currently manufactures the S80L. The Chongqing Changan plant is a JV with Changan (China car company). (Ford has a JV with Changan for local production of its products).

When Geely approached Ford to buy Volvo in 2010, it was met with mixed reactions.

While the Group’s history spans 35 years, one of its biggest moments has been the acquiring of one of Europe’s most prestigious car brands. When Geely first approached to buy Volvo, people were skeptical, even a little dismissive. 11 years later, the Geely-Volvo relationship is one used as a case study for successful cross-cultural business cooperation.

In the wake of the Group’s 35th birthday, we spoke with Lars Danielson, who at the time of the Geely-Volvo deal was the General Manager of the Volvo Cars’ home plant in Gothenburg, Sweden. We hear what he had to say about the approaching Geely deal and how things went for the brands in the years that followed.

Lars Danielson

How did you feel Volvo was doing before the 2010 acquisition by Geely?

After the financial crisis, the automotive industry was facing a great amount of difficulty – this was true for Volvo as well. Even more importantly, we had not renewed our product lineups so we were suffering from an ageing product line.

We were informed by the Ford leadership that Volvo, Jaguar-Land Rover and Aston Martin, were up for sale and we were told that Geely was the preferred buyer of Volvo Cars.

What did you know about Geely before the deal?

I remember the first time I was introduced to a Geely, at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2008. I spent a full day with my colleagues benchmarking Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus – you name it – and at the end of the day, we said “maybe we should pay a visit to the basement to see the Chinese OEMs”. Geely was there with one car, and not a particularly impressive one, and if anyone had told me at that time that this company would acquire Volvo Cars in two years …I wouldn’t have been able to imagine that.

As the deal came about, what were your impressions of the company and its Chairman, Eric Li?

As is normal, most of the Volvo employees had concerns and questions: “What can Geely, and Eric Li, offer to Volvo?” As a company, what can Geely offer in terms of technology? Of course, this perspective changed over the years because Eric Li and the Board made some very important decisions that changed the direction of Volvo Cars: Firstly, to invest in a new product lineup. The decision was then made to invest 11 billion USD in new products.

On top of this, being a Chinese entrepreneur, Eric understood the importance of the Chinese market, so he also launched the “China Growth Plan”. I was involved in building up our manufacturing footprint here with factories in Chengdu, Deqing, Zhangjiakou and also later in Luqiao.

How have things changed in the 11+ years since the deal?

For Volvo, it has been extremely important to have an owner with a long-term perspective of the business and who is willing to invest in the Volvo brand. This has been very important and has also paid off greatly. I think it’s also important to talk about the Geely Group and the fantastic change that has been done by the Geely team. Together, based on the CMA platform, we developed and launched Lynk & Co (a JV between Geely Auto and Volvo) very successfully in China and it is now growing in Europe. There are new brands like the pure electric premium brand Polestar and ZEEKR as well. The Group is a night and day difference between now and then.

How do you see the future for the Group? How do you think things will change?

The automotive landscape has changed a lot over the past years and there is a big transformation going on in the industry. I strongly believe that Geely Group is very well positioned for the future and am also of the opinion that Geely Group will be one of the most successful brands over the next 10 years in the automotive industry globally.

What can others in the industry learn from the Geely-Volvo relationship?

The first time we met with Eric Li in Gothenburg in 2010, he made a very famous statement where he said: “Let’s release the (Volvo) tiger from its cage.” At the time, not many people understood what he meant, but over time he demonstrated that he had trust in the Volvo team and so empowered them to make decisions regarding the future of the company. This has proven to be much more effective in turning around a company when compared to detailed policies and controls.
